The PR.I.S.C.I.LLA project is a European initiative funded by the Erasmus+ programme with the main objective of developing and testing educational resources in order to assist young adults with intellectual disabilities to make a safe and responsible use of social media and internet.
The digital world provides a space where young individuals with intellectual disabilities can comfortably express their thoughts and opinions, often without disclosing their condition. However, this group faces a heightened risk of sexual harassment online compared to their non-disabled peers due to several factors: limited sexual education, which hinders their understanding of consent; insufficient media literacy education; lower cognitive skills that impair their ability to recognize abusive situations and unacceptable behaviours; a tendency towards compliance and low self-determination, making them vulnerable to abuse; psychosocial challenges in interpreting social cues, especially on the Internet where the signal can be ambiguous; and maladaptive social skills.
The P.R.I.S.C.I.L.L.A mission aims to maximize the benefits of expanding social networks and developing positive identities while minimizing the risks of online sexual harassment and cyberbullying. To achieve this mission, the project seeks to promote the responsible use of digital tools through two tailored and inclusive learning programs: one for young individuals, equipping them with the skills and awareness to protect themselves while leveraging the advantages of social media, and another for youth workers to enhance their professional development and enable them to replicate the educational programme. Additionally, the project will provide informal caregivers with strategies and information to ensure that their care recipients can use social media autonomously and safely.
